The grammatical use of tones in Nubri

What is it about?

This paper reports on the Tibeto-Burman language, Nubri, of the high Himalayan region of northern central Nepal. Data is presented to illustrate the use of tone to mark two morphological features in the language: a high tone to mark the genitive case, and a high tone prefix to mark an increase in transitivity. This first account of these data in Nubri is couched in a typological perspective.

Why is it important?

Grammatical tone of this kind is relatively rare. This is the first illustration and analysis of these data in Nubri.
