What is it about?

The editors aim to illustrate the direction that Hispanic sociolinguistics has taken in the last two decades, advancing in the study of the variation of Spanish using networks of sociolinguists from Spanish America and Spain working in coordination. the volume appeals to the diatopic component, as the enormous geographic expanse occupied by the Spanish-speaking community means we must consider the spatial dimension in order to understand how processes of variation work at the macro level of the community, over its entire geography.

Why is it important?

The objectives are to create, within the field of descriptive linguistics, a grammar of the spoken Spanish language; to understand the processes of linguistic variation and the scope of variable phenomena in the entire Hispanic world; to investigate leveling and permeability dynamics of dialects in contact; and to contribute, ultimately, to constructing a theory of language change
