What is it about?

The title pretty much says it. I explore the relation between Gricean implicature and what I call (culturally informed) "response priority" in an ethnomethodological and conversation analytic context. It is the first in what has become a series of papers on scaling and regrading (up/downgrading).

Why is it important?

Scaling is one aspect, along with co-categorization, contrast, and generalization/specification, of what I have been calling "occasioned semantics," an approach to the structure of meaning in talk.
