Why is it important?

This article helps establishing the distinction between lingua academica, i.e., a language that is used for higher education and research, and academic lingua franca, i.e., a language that is used to communicate innovation and facilitate exchange across linguistic borders. Whereas English has become the undisputed academic lingua franca, there are dozens of other linguae academicae, and it is highly debatable that replacing these with the former would be in the interest of the local societies.
