"Many Calls, Little Action: Global Illiteracy in the United States"

What is it about?

In this article, based on a speech before government officials and leading academics, I discuss the university’s role in preparing graduates for an increasingly interdependent world in which the knowledge of other languages and cultures is – again – a critical need. I review the many calls, over many years, for global understanding and language competence, the barriers to sustained follow-up and action, and the consequences for national security, economic competitiveness, and a globally aware citizenry. Finally, I present several recommendations for universities to undertake in partnership with schools, states, businesses, NGOs, and the federal government.

Why is it important?
