This paper looks at the acquisition of quantifier 'some' by second language learners of English.

What is it about?

The acquisition of scalar implicatures (SIs) like 'some' may produce logical or pragmatic responses, and this can depend on the task employed. We show that in a oral Truth Value Judgment task that learners give more pragmatic responses than logical responses.

Why is it important?

Our findings add to a growing literature on this topic and expand our understanding of how second language learners perform in a range of different tasks.
