When is it better to introduce explicit grammar instruction in communicative practice?

What is it about?

This study investigates when it is optimal to draw learners' attention to linguistic forms during communicative practice; that is, before or during the course of a communicative activity.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that 1) exclusive choice between isolated and integrated form-focused instruction is not necessary, and that 2) while both isolated and integrated form-focused instruction are effective in promoting the acquisition of L2 grammar, their effect may vary considerably depending on the linguistic nature of the target features.
