Perception training can improve production

What is it about?

This work demonstrates a connection between perception (listening) and production (speaking) systems by showing that perception training can improve production. Particularly novel in the current study is that training on isolated words and sentences was shown to connect to improvements in larger discourse contexts (i.e., a dialog and paragraph reading task).

Why is it important?

The success of perceptual training programs to increase both perception and production skills provides support for their inclusion in second language classrooms. Showing that improvements are not limited to isolated words, but extend to larger discourse contexts provides further support for the use of perceptual training programs.
