Religious Conversions to Islam

What is it about?

This publication examines the role that history, culture and language have in the conversion to Islam and in the redefinition of the identity of two population groups, the Spanish and the US Latinos through an ethnographic study.

Why is it important?

History, culture, and language are all integral parts of identity. Consequently, it is impossible to analyze the new religious identity of a convert without considering the impact of these factors on how the convert defines a new identity as a Spaniard and a US Latino, respectively. Furthermore, while the role of languages in relation to identity has been extensively studied, this aspect has not yet been thoroughly explored in the context of converts to Islam.
