'Intrusive as' in South Asian varieties of English and Learner Englishes

What is it about?

Asian speakers of English and learners of English sometimes say and/or write sentences such as "I call him as an idiot" (instead of the expected "I call him an idiot"). This paper looks at this construction, the 'intrusive as' construction, in some detail in written English. We find that 'intrusive as' occurs more frequently in written Asian Englishes, but it also occurs in Learner Englishes.
