A minimalist program for linguistics

What is it about?

An overview of the development and character of Operator Grammar, grammars of sublanguages, and the theory of linguistic information. The nature of language imposes an obligation to seek a 'least grammar' (hence, "minimalist") using only those metalinguistic resources which are intrinsic to language.

Why is it important?

This essay surveys results in A grammar of English on mathematical principles (1982), A theory of language and information (1991), and The form of information in science (1989). It aims to dispel prevalent misconceptions about this work.
