Context affects the meanings of bonobo gestures

What is it about?

Bonobos (and other great apes) use gestures to communicate, and many gestures have multiple meanings. We found that these seemingly ambiguous gestures actually have specific meanings in specific contexts, but that sequence order did not seem to impact gesture meanings.

Why is it important?

Context is important in communication for many species, including humans, and we are only just starting to understand its impact on great ape gestures.
