Alternative sentence structure in Korean English
What is it about?
In the article we investigate English sentences produced by Korean speakers of English. Using data from conversations held in a relaxed setting, we analyse how often the speakers realize certain sentence patterns. We argue that language contact between English and Korean but also other factors, such as second-language acquisition, influence the choices that Koreans make when they speak English.
Why is it important?
Although it has received more attention in the last years, Korean English is still a mostly underresearched variety of English. In particular due to the 'English Fever' in South Korea, i.e. the widespread popularity of English in the country, we can observe interesting developments in Korean English. The paper contributes to our understanding of how it has developed and what the future might hold for Korean speakers of English.
