What is it about?

The discussion about race has been scarce in Chinese discourse studies. We conducted a comparative analysis on news reports on the killing of George Floyd in Mainland China and Taiwan from a racial perspective. We examined the discourses to understand how the concepts of race and racism are constructed in these news media. We have shown that the news media in Mainland China and Taiwan bifurcate in reporting styles yet both explicitly identify the issue of racism in the US.

Why is it important?

Our findings showed the discrepancies and commonalities in Chinese media across areas with regards to their reporting styles and attitudes towards the issue of racism in the US. Our study identified future directions for racial discourse analysis in Chinese context.
