How second language pragmatic competence is lost after studying abroad

What is it about?

Study abroad is considered a great opportunity for second language development, including pragmatic competence, which is an essential part of L2 communicative competence. We have shown if L2 English learners' judgment accuracy and processing speed change after six months of returning home from studying abroad.

Why is it important?

In contrast to an abundance of studies regarding the positive effects of study abroad focused on second language pragmatic development, there are very few studies investigating the loss of pragmatic competence (L2 request) after study abroad. Furthermore, we adapted a psycholinguistic approach in analyzing data on L2 learners' reaction times when they judge the appropriateness of L2 request-making forms in a given context.
