The Romanticist tradition in Linguistics and its relevance today to modernizing typology

What is it about?

Typology began with an interest in understanding the differing worldviews (ways of thinking) among different people, though this goal was largely sidelined due to the influence of Bloomfield-Chomsky Structuralism. In the 21st century Linguistics generally has moved back to a more meaning based cognitive approach, but Typology is still stuck in the Structuralist past. In order to modernize Typology we need to go back to its roots in the Romanticist tradition focused on meaning and understanding different worldviews.
