What is it about?

Parents and caregivers of children with hearing loss make decisions for their child every day. They ask hearing health professionals for advice when making decisions about their child’s hearing. The professionals may give parents and caregivers written educational materials, such as cochlear implant brochures, to help them understand their child's condition and treatment options. For the average English-speaking adult in the United States, these materials are often written at a level that is too difficult to read and understand.

Why is it important?

Cochlear implant manufacturers may choose to revise materials so that parents, caregivers, and others can read and understand them. Hearing health professionals should spend the time needed to ensure that parents and caregivers make informed decisions using the most appropriate resources.
