Structure of diaphorin
What is it about?
Citrus greening disease (huanglongbing) is caused by a bacterium transmitted to citrus trees by a psyllids, a type of sap-sucking insect. The bacterium produces a chemical called diaphorin which is similar to a known toxin, pederin, from another bacterium, and may be a factor in causing the damage to the trees. We determined the structure of diaphorin using X-ray crystallography.
Why is it important?
Citrus greening disease is a major threat to world citrus production. Knowing more about the biology of the bacterium that causes the disease may help to find a cure.
