Experimental absorption correction method in powder neutron diffraction

What is it about?

Absorption correction is often a major problem when measuring samples that strongly absorb neutrons. While this is usually done computationally, it often fails. It is even more difficult to handle in a time-of-flight neutron diffractometer, where wavelength is varied as a parameter. This time, we experimentally performed absorption correction using vanadium.

Why is it important?

We experimentally performed the first absorption correction of europium compound powders using incoherent scattering of a vanadium plate at a time-of-flight neutron diffractometer. This method applies to a variety of materials with strong neutron absorption properties.
