Hoe children learn to (re)tell a story
What is it about?
The (re)telling of picture stories is an effective method to identify language problems in children. A good storytelling task measures information transfer, grammaticality and complexity. In the Netherlands, such storytelling tasks were available, but not standardized. As a result, we did not know how an individual child performed compared to peers when a storytelling task is taken. The aim of this study was to collect age-related norm data for two storytelling tasks. This means we wanted to know what scores children of a certain age achieve on average on these narration tasks. We wanted to collect these norm data so that we can better detect language problems and thus help children with language problems earlier.
