Finding the Best Way to Use Recasting for Children with Language Disorders
What is it about?
We looked at past studies on recasting, a way to help children with developmental language disorder by repeating their words with correct grammar. We wanted to know how much, how often, and in what way it works best. While the current research cannot show the best way to use recasting, we identified approaches that are likely to lead to positive outcomes based on the existing literature. We recommend the type of studies that could be conducted to explore the best way recasts are used, and we note that the current idea of “dosage” is still partly ambiguous and should be defined more clearly.

This review is important because it provides practical guidance for helping children with developmental language disorder. By summarizing effective ways recasting has been used, we suggest study designs and dosage combinations that can be applied, which will benefit the conduct of systematic reviews in the future. The findings of this review can guide clinicians and help improve how dosage is understood for recasting and other interventions.
