Ultrasound Evaluation of Swallowing
What is it about?
Ultrasound Evaluation of Swallowing (USES) offers a new way to assess swallowing functions that is less invasive and more accessible. This study outlines our recording protocol and a set of multidimensional measurements in capturing the hyoid kinematics in typical swallows.
Why is it important?
The quantification of hyoid kinematics in swallowing through the current USES recording protocol concurs with typical swallows in the literature. This provides the initial evidence for USES to be adopted clinically. The clinical utility of USES is further enhanced by the semi-automatic extraction of hyoid function using a deep neural net and feature-finding algorithms.
