Children with UHL/LUHU struggle to hear in noisy environments. Remote Microphone Systems may help.

What is it about? Children with limited usable hearing unilaterally (LUHU) may seem like they hear fine due to the normal-hearing ear but often struggle in noisy and reverberant classrooms. They cannot always be positioned near the teacher, and therefore, understanding the effect of distance on their understanding of speech is critical. This study assessed the performance of children with LUHU using a remote microphone system in a simulated classroom environment located at varying distances from a teacher speaking from a frontal position. The study included a control group of children with normal hearing thresholds in both ears. The Roger Focus II ear-level receiver (worn in the normal-hearing ear) paired with a Roger Touchscreen Mic significantly boosted performance over unaided listening with gains of up to 60% in speech recognition at 5m in noise (2 dB SNR), outperforming children with normal-hearing bilaterally. Fitting emphasized minimal insertion loss via real-ear measures and dome selection for comfort in the normal ear.
Why is it important?
Children with LUHU face academic and social risks in noisy classrooms due to poor speech-in-noise understanding and distance effects, yet interventions are understudied beyond 1.5m. Results show the Roger remote microphone system overcomes noise, reverberation, and distance (up to a distance mimicking sitting at the rear of a classroom), enabling equal or better access to the teacher's voice regardless of position, where strategic seating isn't always feasible. This evidence supports audiologists' recommendations for RM tech alongside self-advocacy, potentially reducing listening fatigue and delays in mainstreamed kids.
