A quality of life instrument for people with hearing loss is translated into German
What is it about?
If adults with profound hearing loss decide to get treated with cochlear implant (hearing implant), it does not only change their hearing but also situations in their everyday life. Therefore, it is important that the treatment is not only evaluated through hearing tests, but also through the measurement of quality of life. In order to measure quality of life in people with cochlear implants we need a questionnaire that asks questions about important areas of everyday life that may change as a result of a changed hearing situation. The Cochlear Implant Quality of Life (CIQOL) instruments were developed in the USA for this purpose. In this study, the instruments were translated into German. The instruments were then tested by 15 cochlear implant users in interviews. The interviews were used to make sure that the questionnaire is easy to understand.
Why is it important?
Through this adaptation we provide an important tool to measure quality of life in German language so that it can be used in clinical practice and in research with German-speaking cochlear implant users.
