Are there any benefits to training listeners on rating dysarthria features?
What is it about?
High variability among raters remains a central issue for auditory-perceptual judgments, and auditory training is one way to improve rater reliability and rating validity. This is the first study to explore the effects of a stimulus-response-feedback training paradigm on rater reliability, criterion validity, and the magnitude of visual analog scaling of dysarthric features.
Why is it important?
The verdict is that auditory training can produce meaningful improvements in inter-rater reliability. The validity of non-expert ratings is high even without training, except for the feature, monotony. The magnitude of scaled scores remains unaltered with training, which is considered a positive effect since lowering of scores post-training when validity is high could be interpreted as exposure-related desensitization to disordered speech samples.
