Treating auditory processing dysfunction in the military population
What is it about?
There are unique challenges to treating military personnel and veterans with auditory processing difficulties. By exposure to known military risk factors (e.g., head trauma, blast, noise, neurotoxins), these patients often present with complex health histories, comorbidities, concerns, and deficits that can have substantial impact on their ability to perform in military settings. This report provides an overview of available treatment strategies based on evidence for their use in adults. We emphasize the need for multidisciplinary care, and for an inclusive approach to assessment and treatment. We also identify knowledge and capability gaps that we hope can serve as a roadmap for future research.
Why is it important?
A growing body of research indicates that risk factors for functional auditory complaints and deficits include hazards common to military service. However, there is no formal clinical guideline that speaks specifically to the evaluation and management of central auditory processing dysfunction in military personnel, or to the complexities that may arise in its treatment. This publication provides a consolidated reference to inform the selection of appropriate interventions.
