Social Determinants of Health and Voice Disorders
What is it about?
This paper is a tutorial on trauma-informed voice care. It reviews the literature on adverse childhood experiences and discrimination which are both social determinants of health. It then describes how these SDOHs can cause toxic stress and trauma and explains how psychosocial factors influence health. Finally, it relates what we know about SDOHs, toxic stress and trauma to voice disorders and emphasizes how trauma-informed care can improve patient outcomes and advance health equity for all.
Why is it important?
Until now there has been very little research on social determinants of health in the voice literature. This paper serves as a call for more research on SDOHs and voice disorders. There is also a call for universal practice of trauma-informed voice care.
