Benefits of early implantation for language and cognitive development

What is it about?

This study aimed to address two questions: 1. Can young children with early implantation develop age-equivalent phonological awareness (PA) skill and working memory (WM) capacity as their normal hearing (NH) peers? 2. Is there a significant correlation between these two basic skills for language and cognition?

Why is it important?

Although the benefits of cochlear implants are well known, it remains to be examined whether early implantation can help deaf children develop PA and WM skills that are comparable to age-matched peers with normal hearing.
