What is it about?
We tested how long communication samples need to be to measure vocal skills. Samples came from a scripted play-based assessment. We found that relatively short samples (10 minutes or less) are reliable for measuring vocal skills of children with autism who use few or no words.
Why is it important?
Measuring vocalizations, which occur before spoken words, may help us know if a child is making progress toward learning to talk. Communication samples that are too short yield unreliable results. Samples that are too long waste time. Samples of the right length can help us improve intervention services.
