Making a Standard Clinical Resource More Inclusive
What is it about?
Reading aloud of standard paragraphs provides speech-language pathologists with important information about many aspects of a client's speech and language systems. We modified a commonly used standard paragraph to make it more inclusive while maintaining clinically important features.
Why is it important?
Creating an affirming and inclusive clinical environment is critical to providing quality care to all clients. Many standard clinical tools were developed in times when gendered language and stereotypes were common. Simple adjustments to avoid potentially exclusionary or microaggressive language can enhance the clinical relationship and the accuracy of clinical findings.
