"It depends on the situation": Impacts of listening situations on personal attributes
What is it about?
In Audiology research, we usually assess personal attributes using very generalized assessment scales. However, often research participants share that their responses would depend on the situation they are in. In this article, the authors explored how adults with hearing loss respond to surveys about their confidence, personality, and emotional state when asked in general versus in listening-related situations. They found that individuals report to have more negative emotional states in listening-related situations. However, there was no impact on listening situations on their confidence or personality.
Why is it important?
As efforts are being made to make hearing treatments more individualized and patient-centered, understanding each patient and their attributes will help tailor-made hearing evaluation and treatment. This study is a step towards shedding some light on this topic and suggests that we might need listening-specific measures to test emotional states of a person with hearing loss.
