Characterizing anarthria to facilitate neurological diagnosis
What is it about?
In this paper we discuss a case who in the context of a neurodegenerative disease presented with anarthria. We illustrate how SLPs can characterize anarthria to facilitate neurological diagnosis and plan appropriate behavioral management.
Why is it important?
In the past 3 decades, recognition of a variety of neurodegenerative diseases manifesting primarily as verbal difficulty has increased. By using their expertise, SLPs can play an important role in characterizing the underlying verbal difficulty in such patients and facilitate neurological differential diagnosis and plan appropriate behavioral management. Even when the verbal difficulty is severe (as in anarthria), SLPs can contribute to its appropriate clinical characterization.
