Using the Culturally Responsive Teamwork Framework to make your work more diverse

What is it about?

The profession of speech-language pathology needs to be more diverse to help combat racism, bias, and prejudice. Change is needed at the system and the individual levels. This paper explains the Culturally Responsive Teamwork Framework. This framework draws on international research and experiences to expand personal and professional practices. The framework has four parts: 1. Intra-personal practices (understanding yourself) 2. Inter-personal practices (listening to others) 3. Intra-professional practices (working with other speech-language pathologists) 4. Inter-professional practices (working with professionals who are not speech-language pathologists) Individual speech-language pathologists can use this model to change the way they work to become more diverse and culturally responsive.

Why is it important?

The Culturally Responsive Teamwork Framework is a practical tool that speech-pathologists can use to strengthen their work. The framework can be used to promote evidence-based practice and social justice, especially when speech-language pathologists work with people who are often discriminated against.
