A Deeper Look at Language Errors made by Adult Speakers who are Bilingual
What is it about?
In this study, we explore different lexical, grammatical, omission errors made by bilingual Portuguese, Spanish, and Korean speakers while repeating sentences in English in both quiet and noisy backgrounds to study whether the presence of noise increases errors made.
Why is it important?
Classrooms are not typically quiet environments. This study shows that bilingual speakers are more prone to omissions and other language errors when background noise is present. This means that bilingual students in classroom settings may be demonstrating difficulty accessing the information presented to them (i.e., through incomplete note taking, etc.) when in a classroom with different background noise present. The results of this study should be taken into account when creating an optimal learning environment for students who are bilingual.
