What is it about?

This study evaluates the safety and efficacy of a novel sensory stimulation protocol designed to enhance cough sensitivity for patients with silent aspiration

Why is it important?

Over 50% of stroke survivors will have dysphagia (swallowing impairment). Aspiration pneumonia - a common consequence of dysphagia - complicates recovery for many stroke patients. Reducing aspiration pneumonia through rehabilitation of airway protective mechanisms during swallowing increases quality of life and reduces health care costs. Currently, there are no treatments for post-stroke patients with impaired airway protective mechanisms during swallowing. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of a novel rehabilitation protocol that enhances airway protective mechanisms (specifically cough and swallowing) in patients following stroke.
