Reference values for physiological measures of healthy liquid swallowing

What is it about?

This study describes normal swallowing physiology for liquids and the effect of thickening liquids. Measures are taken from dynamic x-ray recordings of swallowing (videofluoroscopy) using a standard operating procedure.

Why is it important?

This paper provides new reference data for healthy swallowing physiology using liquids prepared to match the thin, slightly thick, mildly thick, moderately thick and extremely thick levels of the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative framework (www.iddsi.org). These references can be used for comparison when determining which aspects of a patient's swallowing physiology fall outside the range seen in healthy individuals.
