What is it about?
The pronunciation of words differs among dialects of the same language. As children grow the changes in their speech are apparent as the develop their language skills. This development is influenced by various factors. One such factor is the influence of other dialects of the language. This paper examines the acoustic data of three dialects of English American English (AE) British English (BE) and Jamaican English (JE) during the developmental years in children, owing to the sociopolitical and historical influence of AE and BE on JE.
Why is it important?
This body of work demonstrates the uniqueness of Jamaican English (JE) as a language. This is tremendous as JE is a direct derivative of British English (BE) and due to geographical proximity and socioeconomic factors, is influenced by American English (AE).
