Glottal Aerodynamic Measures is helping to discriminate vocal hyperfunction

What is it about?

Vocal Hyperfunction (VH) is an important concern in speech disorders which affects voice health status. In this work, we show that using SPL-normalized aerodynamic measures derived from multiple oral airflow recordings of women voices, two types of VH, phonotraumatic (nodules) and nonphonotraumatic (muscle tension dysphonia), can be differentiated from a group of matched-controls with normal voices.

Why is it important?

Our findings show the importance of incorporating loudness normalization based on SPL. The multiple and simultaneous aerodynamic measures were enhanced with the SPL normalization improving the multivariate statistical differentiation as well.
