Language exposure assessment

What is it about?

Provides a standardized approach to measuring how many languages a child is exposed to and the quantity and quality of that exposure. Building on the widely-used Language Exposure Questionnaire, this assessment improves standardization of measurement across labs for greater comparability of studies in early acquisition. This approach consists of a detailed parent interview and is appropriate for assessment from birth through the preschool years.

Why is it important?

Language exposure estimates derived from this assessment account for significant unique variance above global parent estimates in accounting for child vocabulary. The two benefits of this approach are standardization and a better fit with observed word knowledge. The assessment is available free of charge with embedded calculations of input in each language to reduce the possibility of errors.
