Muscle weakness and speech

What is it about?

This study explores the effect of weakness related to muscle cell loss in a form of muscular dystrophy in adults on the production of intelligible speech.

Why is it important?

This study shows that deficits in speech intelligibility are not caused reduced strength of speech muscles. Speech requires relatively little strength. People with OPMD have reduced tongue strength compared to healthy adults, but their speech can still be very intelligible.
