How hard to individuals with aphasia work to complete verbal and non-verbal working memory tasks?
What is it about?
This study examined the effort individuals with aphasia allocate to verbal compared with spatial tasks. Heart rate variability was used to objectively quantify effort. We showed that individuals with aphasia did invest effort into tasks, however the effort invested did not differ with the difficulty of the tasks.
Why is it important?
If effort is not being adequately invested based on the difficulty of the tasks, additional research is needed to determine reasons for the impaired allocation of effort and potential impacts on cognitive-linguistic performance.
